Ballys Saddle Brook is part of another story of a wildly successful chain from back in the day, but due to more recent changes in the industry, has severely fallen behind. Unlike Gold’s Gym, however, they have managed to adjust and are still able to open new locations after filing for Chapter 11 several times, last time being in 2008. The only real reason they are still functioning today is because many banks and large corporations have saved them several times with huge funding. This review is of the Saddle Brook location mainly.
Staff (7/10): The business model at Bally’s is to sell, sell, sell. They have membership sales and then personal training sales. Of course there are also your typical friendly desk staff. Other than that, you can’t find much help here.
Other Members (6/10): The environment really depends on the time of the day. At night it is loaded with meat-heads and packed like a Saturday night club. Earlier in the day it is more tolerable, but you really don’t see people socializing here.
Cleanliness (3/10): Despite the cleaning staff, easily one of the filthiest gyms I have ever been to. The members have no respect for rules but they are not enforced well at all.
Equipment (5/10): With the exception of one small section, all the equipment is old, outdated, and not well kept. There is one engineer that does repairs and maintenance, but he falls far behind on his list of duties.
Personal Training (2/10): Their system is designed to sell training, but not deliver results. Their packages aren’t flexible at all, and really are not geared towards helping people. It is simply about extracting as much money as possible from an already low-income member-base.
Group Classes (7/10): Probably the best thing they have going for them is their large classes that are offered daily. Many people love this, but not all classes are free with membership!
Price (7/10): The entire company managed to do a major shift on pricing. It is no longer a premium gym, but rather offers extremely competitive rates. However, they will get you for as much as possible. If you hold out you can walk away with a monthly membership in the 20′s. Good luck getting out of the contract though.. better have someone forge a fake death certificate for you.
Overall Score (51%): I am not a huge fan of this chain. Some facilities are better managed than others, but the entire corporate structure is designed for failure, while this company is continuously hemorrhaging money. The only reason to choose this location is for convenience of price and distance. Keep in mind that some locations are much better than this particular one.
